Sedation Dentistry for Kids in Staten Island

If your child gets nervous in the dental chair, you're not alone — and there's a gentle way to help. At Staten Island Pediatric Dentistry, we use nitrous oxide, better known as laughing gas or "sweet air," to help anxious children relax and feel comfortable during their visit. It's safe, mild, and wears off within minutes, so your child can get the care they need without the stress.

What Is Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)?

Nitrous oxide is a safe, mild sedative that takes the edge off dental anxiety. Your child breathes it in through a small, scented nose mask that fits comfortably over the nose. Within a few minutes, they begin to feel calm, relaxed, and at ease — many kids describe it as a light, floaty, happy feeling.

Importantly, laughing gas is not general anesthesia. Your child stays fully awake the entire time, can hear and respond to us, and can talk with you and the dentist throughout the visit. We simply ask them to breathe slowly through their nose, which is the best way to let the gas do its work.

What to Expect During the Visit

We keep the whole experience simple and unhurried so your child feels in control:

  1. The mask goes on. Your child chooses from scented nose masks and we place it gently. There are no needles or unfamiliar sensations to start.
  2. They relax. Over a few minutes, the nitrous takes effect and anxiety eases. Your child stays awake and aware the entire time.
  3. We complete treatment. With your child calm and comfortable, we're able to work efficiently and gently.
  4. It wears off fast. At the end, we switch to oxygen for a few minutes and the effects clear quickly — usually within minutes.

Because nitrous oxide leaves the system so quickly, your child can return to normal activities, including school, right after the appointment. We'll share any simple pre-visit instructions ahead of time.

Is Laughing Gas Safe for Children?

Yes. Nitrous oxide is one of the safest and most widely used forms of sedation in pediatric dentistry, with a long track record of safe use in children. It's mild, the dose is carefully controlled and monitored by our team throughout the visit, and the effects reverse quickly once the mask comes off. Your child remains conscious and responsive the whole time.

As board-certified pediatric dentists, Dr. Michelle Flanigan and Dr. Yelena Lange are specifically trained in safely managing young patients' comfort and behavior, and your child's safety is always our first priority.

Is My Child a Candidate?

Nitrous oxide is a great fit for children with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or difficulty sitting still for treatment. It can turn a stressful visit into a calm one and help build positive associations with the dentist early on.

It's also worth knowing that many children simply grow more comfortable with dental visits as they get older, so laughing gas isn't always needed long-term. We'll only recommend it when it genuinely helps your child have a better experience.

When a Child Needs More Than Laughing Gas

Nitrous oxide is ideal for mild to moderate anxiety, but some children — particularly those with significant anxiety, extensive treatment needs, or special health care needs — do best with deeper sedation. For these situations, we also offer hospital-based dentistry under general anesthesia, delivered by a trained pediatric anesthesiologist at Northwell Staten Island University Hospital.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laughing gas safe for kids? Yes. Nitrous oxide is one of the safest, most established sedation methods in pediatric dentistry. The dose is carefully controlled and monitored throughout the visit, and the effects wear off within minutes.

Will my child be awake? Yes. Laughing gas is not general anesthesia. Your child stays fully awake and aware, and can talk with you and the dentist the entire time.

How long do the effects last? The calming effect begins within a few minutes and clears just as quickly once the mask is removed and your child breathes oxygen. Most children feel completely normal shortly after the appointment.

Are there side effects? Side effects are uncommon and mild. Because the gas leaves the body so quickly, your child can usually return to normal activities, including school, right away.

Will my child need laughing gas at every visit? Not necessarily. Many children become more comfortable with dental visits as they get older and may not need it long-term. We use it only when it helps.

What if laughing gas isn't enough for my child? For children who need deeper sedation, we offer hospital-based care under general anesthesia. Call us at (718) 761-7316 and we'll talk through the safest option for your child.
